Writing Portfolio focusing on Mental Health in Children
This portfolio features four different articles on the theme of children and mental health, with the purpose of spreading awareness and understanding of such conditions that might affect children in an everyday settings. Another goal of these writings is to assist interested parties in learning how they can help such children thrive despite their less than ideal situations.
-First is a pamphlet; informative, focused and intended for a general audience.
-The second paper examines the official webpage for the American Psychological Association (APA). This paper clearly outlines not only the strengths and messages of the website, but highlights the ways it can be used to positively affect the lives of the average layperson perusing the site.
-The third project is an excerpt from an essay of a Sociological Examination of The Outsiders, a novel by S. E. Hinton. This excerpt is an important addition because it adds a larger context for children and mental health, including the very important contextual piece that strongly affects every child’s development. Many adults in positions of responsibility over children may need the message expressed in this paper to remind them that not all deviant behavior is a disorder that needs to be corrected, and that any problem a child faces cannot be gracefully managed from a position of authority without first attempting to understand the issue in its entirety, from the vantage of an insider.
-The fourth project is a research paper on childhood trauma and PTSD. While using more complex language and delving deeper into the scientific specifics of psychology, the narrative still aims to be clear and concise in its delivery, hopefully allowing to be informative to both a professional and general audience.
The kind of information offered here are most useful for professionals in a child focused setting, for example teachers, or even parents.
